Warm Air Heating Explained

How Does it Work?

Warm Air Heating is simply the process of turning cool air into warm air.

Warm Air appliances do this by actively passing the cool air through a heat exchanger, then blowing it into rooms through vents in the floor, walls or ceiling.

The heated metal plates within the exchanger heat the cooler air as it passes across, turning it into hot air. Once the air has been warmed it is distrubuted thoughout the property via air ducts fitted within the wall cavities.

Similar to conventional central heating, this process continues until the user selected temperature on the room thermostat is reached.

Installation Requirements

Assuming your property is fitted with the appropriate ducting, Warm Air Heating systems can be quick and easy to update.

There is minimal disruption and the work is confined to the heating compartment area. Usually there are no floor boards to lift or pipework to run that would be associated with a wet system installation.

Properties that were not built with Warm Air Heating in mind are not usually suitable as retrofitting for Warm Air Heating can be expensive and disruptive for the homeowner.

Upflow Air Handler?

An upflow air handler and/or heater takes in air from the bottom of the appliance, warms it in the heat exchanger, and then blows it upward into the ductwork of your home. Upflow systems need to be placed in a basement or crawlspace to be energy efficient, as they work on the principle that warm air rises.

Some of the benefits of an Upflow Air Handler:

  • Better energy efficiency - As heat rises, upflow furnaces tend to be more energy efficient than downflow ones.
  • Comfort - Upflow systems heat from the floor up, and many people find this a little more comfortable than from the ceiling down.
  • Easier to Install - Upflow systems can rest directly on the ground floor or garage floor. With a downflow system, flooring may need to be reinforced as downflow systems are typically placed in attics.

Downflow Air Handler?

As you may have guessed, a downflow air handler takes in air at the top of the appliance, warms it and then disperses it down into your home’s ductwork. As such, the placement of a downflow system is commonly in an attic space, although it can also be placed in a garage or on the main level of a home. Some of the challenges with a downflow furnace are that installation can be more complicated they fight the natural tendency of hot air to rise. However, not all homes have a basement or crawlspace, so the benefit of a downflow furnace is that it fits with every type of property.
